Lolly Hedeen wasn’t always a runner.

But she’s almost always been very active.

In fact, she had been an avid mountain bike rider and road cyclist. She enjoyed a career in cycling for 26 years, including owning a bicycle shop and being regarded as a top female bicycle mechanic on the pro mountain bike circuit.

After a move and a career change, Lolly’s coworker and newfound friend suggested she try running. Having both asthma and rheumatoid arthritis, Lolly was skeptical. But she took the chance and ran her first mile.

And she kept going.

She eventually joined a local training club and, as her interest in running grew, she entered race after race, placing in her age group in many of the events.

In 2015, Lolly decided to form a team to participate in the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178-mile relay race. This is where the team name “Lolly’s Follies” began. Lolly ran with the “Follies” in 2015 and 2016.

Then in May of 2017, Lolly was diagnosed with Clear Cell Carcinoma Ovarian Cancer Stage 3B - the most aggressive type of ovarian cancer. The cancer had already spread, requiring an invasive surgery. Following the surgery and six chemotherapy sessions, Lolly felt well enough again to participate in a 10K and a 5K, which served to inspire her team and others in the running community.

“Do what you can do,” she said, “and don’t let others pressure you”

In December of 2017, however, Lolly learned that her cancer was terminal. She and her friends were devastated. “Lolly’s Follies” considered dropping out of the annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, since it was clear that Lolly would not be able to run with them. But the race directors convinced the team to continue as a charity team. They promised that as long as the Odyssey continues, “Lolly’s Follies” will always have a place in the race, and their registration fees and any other funds raised would be donated to the charity of Lolly’s choice.

Lolly has chosen the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition to bring attention to this deadly disease. “Lolly’s Follies” will continue in the Reno-Odyssey and are also planning other fundraising activities in and around Reno.

In addition to being a constant inspiration to her friends and family, Lolly is an avid bird watcher, and has been known to stop in the middle of a run to take pictures. She is also fond of hanging out with her fur baby, Abby.

Thank you for visiting. This cause is very dear to us, and we appreciate all the support we can get! Together we can make a difference!
